College football Week 5 brought fireworks across the nation, shaking up the AP Top 25 with some monumental wins and tough upsets. At the top, No. 1 Ohio State continued to prove its dominance, handling Washington 24–6 to remain unbeaten. Right behind them, No. 6 Oregon pulled off a huge statement win, outlasting No. 3 Penn State 30–24 in double overtime. On the flip side, No. 4 LSU stumbled in a 24–19 defeat at the hands of No. 13 Ole Miss, while No. 17 Alabama stunned No. 5 Georgia 24–21 in a thriller that reminded everyone the Tide aren't going anywhere.
Elsewhere in the Top 10, No. 9 Texas A&M edged Auburn 16–10, while No. 11 Indiana stayed hot with a 20–15 victory over Iowa. No. 14 Iowa State rolled past Arizona 39–14, and No. 15 Tennessee held off Mississippi State 41–34 in overtime. Georgia Tech, ranked No. 16, survived Wake Forest 30–29 in another overtime battle, while No. 18 Vanderbilt put up big numbers in a 55–35 win over Utah State. No. 20 Missouri cruised past UMass 42–6.
The back half of the Top 25 wasn't short on drama either. No. 23 Illinois took down No. 21 USC in a 34–32 nail-biter, and No. 22 Notre Dame dominated Arkansas 56–13. Meanwhile, No. 25 BYU kept its momentum alive by holding off Colorado 24–21. On Friday night, the biggest shocker came when Virginia toppled No. 8 Florida State 46–38 in double overtime, a result that could send shockwaves through the ACC race. To cap it off, Arizona State upset No. 24 TCU 27–24, dealing the Horned Frogs their first blemish of the year.
By week's end, the AP Poll still had Ohio State leading the way, followed by Miami, Penn State, LSU, and Georgia. Oregon, Oklahoma, and Florida State filled out the upper tier, while Texas A&M and Texas rounded out the top ten. Further down, Indiana, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Iowa State, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Vanderbilt, Michigan, and Missouri all secured their places. USC, Notre Dame, Illinois, TCU, and BYU completed the rankings, setting the stage for more chaos in the weeks ahead.
