Missouri State Representative Anthony Ealy Jr. was arrested on November 4, 2026, in Jefferson City, just twenty-four hours after securing a third term in office.
Police responded before noon to reports of a disturbance outside a building on East Capitol Avenue, where witnesses observed a man yelling and acting erratically. Official reports stated that he appeared to be experiencing a panic attack or a mental health crisis during the episode.
According to probable cause documents, when a bystander tried to calm the situation, Ealy lunged at them, claimed to possess a firearm, and explicitly threatened to kill them. He was officially charged on November 5 with fourth-degree assault and peace disturbance, which are both misdemeanor offenses.
Ealy denied making any threats or mentioning a gun. He was held without bond at the Cole County Jail until a video arraignment on November 6, after which he was released.
In a public statement, Ealy maintained his absolute innocence, claiming he was actually chased by an individual wielding a baseball bat and referencing a spiritual prophecy.
Ealy is a Democrat who represents Missouri's 36th House District, which encompasses the Grandview area in Jackson County. Initially elected in 2022, he stands as the first Black representative for Grandview and the youngest individual to hold the seat in the history of the district.
During the general election on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Ealy comfortably won his third term by securing 68 percent of the vote against Republican challenger Dave Thomas.
A spokesperson for the House Democratic leadership confirmed that Ealy had already been stripped of all his legislative committee assignments in the spring of 2026 so that he could focus on personal matters. Democratic leadership had previously urged him not to run for reelection, and the party currently has no plans to restore his committee assignments for the upcoming 2027 legislative session.
Outside of his role in the legislature, Ealy operates as a licensed attorney and works as the managing partner of Ealy Law, Notary and Consulting, LLC. He earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Northwest Missouri State University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri–Columbia School of Law.
